By the end of 2012, it became clear that a huge amount of money and carbon was being wasted on home heating in the UK. By our estimate, about £5bn a year could be lopped off domestic gas bills without anyone getting cold. So, after leading a workshop at the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change; where everyone agreed that zoning and occupancy sensing were obviously the right things to do, Damon Hart-Davis created the OpenTRV open source project to actually do it.
Subsequently Damon Hart-Davis and Mark Hill created OpenTRV the company, and OpenTRV has created Radbot to bring this technology to the home. Radbot is OpenTRV’s bid to save your wallet and the planet, and leave you more time to do the important things in life.
Damon Hart-Davis holds a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence from Edinburgh University, and holds a Master in Theoretical Computer Science. He has lived in the UK for most of his life and worked almost exclusively for self-owned businesses, among which is one of the UK’s first Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Damon is passionate about energy efficiency and sustainability, and founded OpenTRV to develop a proper solution to address this. He is slightly obsessive about solar PV generation, energy efficiency, tiny houses, and his beard.
Mark Hill studied Computer Systems Engineering at Warwick University and holds a CTEFLA for teaching English as a foreign language. He lived in London working on software systems for financial institutions for over 15 years. Mark ran across Damon’s project by chance, and naturally, gatecrashed the first award party for OpenTRV (British Gas Connecting Homes 2013) and offered to do what it took to get it to market. Mark aims to visit as many countries as the years he’s been around for.
Aditya Mahardhika was born and raised in Indonesia, and moved to London for a Master’s Degree in Strategic Marketing from the Imperial London College. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Management and has worked in Digital Marketing in various capacities including as a Digital Marketing Strategist for Sahat International, and the Social Media and Creative Manager for the London Digital Marketing Festival. Aditya has lived and travelled to over twenty countries, and loves to preserve memories and tell stories, through photographs and videos.
Dennis Erbilgin was born and raised in Maidenhead. This is not to be confused with Maidenstone, and certainly not Kent. He has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Warwick University, and learned to code designing lighting shows for bands and parties. He left this glamorous life for OpenTRV because he liked the product and the team behind it. Dennis is also always right. Especially when he says no one outside of Turkey can pronounce his name. Always.
Dennis Isaac was born in Chile, and relocated to the UK recently. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, and a Master’s in Organizational Psychology and Consumer Behaviour. He joined the team to contribute to improving the quality of life by reducing our carbon footprint. Dennis likes mountain biking and snowboarding, and belongs to the rare breed of humans who can listen to the same song fifty times in a row without spontaneously combusting.
